FAQs:  Author Assemblies & School Visits

Do you offer author assemblies?

Yes!  Sharing with students about books, writing, and the mindfulness lessons contained in the Big Feelings Friends series is one of my favorite parts of being an author.

What grades are your assemblies geared toward?

I love presenting to students ages 2-11!  I frequently present at preschools (ages 2-5) and elementary schools (Grades K-5) and tailor my presentation accordingly!

How long do your assemblies last?

My elementary school assemblies run for 35-45 minutes.  When I visit preschools, depending on the age and stamina of the children, I present for 15-30 minutes per group.

What is the format of your assemblies?

While I customize each presentation to the school’s specific needs, my typical author assembly includes an introduction to how and why I became an author, a storytime and discussion of one of my four books (your choice or I can pick!), and an interactive presentation of mindfulness activities in connection with the series’ theme of processing big feelings.

What kind of mindfulness activities do you share with the children?

Depending on the book we’re discussing and the season we’re in, I may share breathing exercises inspired by the characters of my books, a discussion on gratitude journals, positive self talk, or positive affirmations, a tapping exercise, a brief meditation, or a calming strategy called a butterfly hug.

Are your presentations interactive?

Absolutely!!  I love engaging the students and keeping them involved throughout the presentation.  I’ll ask questions during our discussion, allow them to ask me questions about my journey as an author, and request volunteers to help demonstrate our mindfulness exercises.

Can we skip the mindfulness exercises?

Sure!  While I hear from staff and students that they’re fun and impactful and correspond with many schools’ SEL initiatives, I’m happy to stick to a more basic storytime and author presentation if you prefer.  My goal for each author visit is to leave each student feeling excited about reading and empowered to write stories of their own.

Do you offer virtual assemblies?

I sure do!  Virtual assemblies are a wonderful and cost-effective way to share with students around the world!

Can students purchase signed copies of your books?

Yes!  I provide each school with a custom pre-order flyer before the assembly.  The flyer allows families to contact me directly to order signed copies of my books.  I bring the signed books in for schools to distribute on the day of the assembly.

Can students ask questions about your books and what it's like to be an author?

Yes!  I can either allow for a handful of questions at the end of the presentation, or students can prepare questions with their classes beforehand and I will answer them at the assembly.  This often allows for more thoughtful and focused questions, but I am open to what works best for you!

How much do you charge for an author assembly?

For schools within 60 minutes of Bergen County, NJ, my in-person author assemblies are $500 for one session, $750 for two sessions, and $900 for three sessions.  There is no maximum to the number of students permitted in each session as long as they fit comfortably. For travel in excess of 60 minutes from Bergen County, NJ, there will be an additional travel charge. Pricing for virtual assemblies will vary based on the program. Contact me to discuss :)
